Canberra Here We Come

As if Canberra hasn't been exciting enough the past few weeks, this weekend our capital city will play host to Canberra's Handmade Upmarket on Saturday 11th at Kamberra Wine Company and then Mathilda's Market on Sunday 12th at the Park Hyatt. billy mac clothing will have stalls at both fabulous markets and I would love you to drop by and say hello. Saturday also marks the first day of Floriade so what a great time to be in Canberra. We will be packing up the billy mac mobile and making a roadtrip of it.

When I was growing up my Dad drove a 1973 Holden HQ Kingswood. It had brown metallic paint with a white roof, beige bench seats, column shift ... and it roared. It was so cool in so many ways.

Think 50s screen sirens, Gidget, 60s Roller Derby girls and 40s pinup girls and you might come close to the offerings of Miss Fancy Pants. The Miss Fancy Pants MadeIt store is full of the most AMAZING product photography - and this shoot is my favourite. The lighting is perfect, the location with vintage biplane is a dream come true and the girls without a doubt capture the essence of this fabulous underwear brand.

The photography and styling of this shoot is truly amazing and would be at home in any glossy fashion magazine. The images remind me of the Vargas inspired artworks painted on the nosecone of WWII bombers.

My list of fab stuff I found on madeit.com.au for this week is based around my love of typography and most specifically the Ampersand. I think the Ampersand works beautifully in good old fashioned Times Roman, but who would have thought that it could look so amazing as a chandelier? Love it.

EXTRAordinary ... Project 18 Auction for Education

I thought I would point you in the direction of Cate Bolt from Project 18. I’ve been following Cate on Twitter for a while and whilst I enjoyed her tweets, I hadn’t delved deeper to find out what she’s about. Last week I did. Project 18 is a not for profit organisation and their mission statement is:

To increase the quality of life of underprivileged and orphaned children through family placement, housing, education and emotional nourishment. And to lead the children to a life of compassion & understanding of the environment by creating sustainable lifestyles which enable them to live in harmony with the planet

Through fundraising, donations and auctions Project 18 has set up and furnished an orphanage in Indonesia - no mean feat. From reading Cate’s blog and the Project 18 website she decided to do something extraordinary ... this was it ... plus also tackling the issue of homelessness (Cate’s Cause), deforestation (Wildlife Refuge and Reforestation project) and Education Outreach – where Project 18 would provide schooling for village children in Indonesia, and one meal per day.

Impressed yet?

... she’s also a mother of 9.

Let that sink in for a little while.

Cate’s request on Twitter was to draw attention to the Project 18 Auction for Education facebook page - an Auction to raise money to sponsor children to attend school while remaining in their family home. This means Project 18 can provide an education and hope for a brighter future, without compromising family, cultural and religious commitments. In the words of Project 18 “During our travels we came across many children who didn't meet the requirements for acceptance into the orphanage (ie both parents were still living) but who were socially disadvantaged by the inability to afford to go to school.”

I love necklaces, I really, really love necklaces. And most of all I love chunky beaded necklaces. I've been on the search for the perfect red resin necklace ... I know what I want, I want Dinosaur Designs but at $275 I just can't justify it.

I met a woman at Mathilda's Markets with the most amazing necklace, it was black pebbles and she bought it from Elk Accessories - hers was resin and no longer in stock. But I found these, and I love them. They are wood and priced at $35 and $45 for the longer ones ... much more reasonable!

So then I went to Etsy and found stratdesigns from Brisbane. I like her philosophy - as someone who lives in jeans and t-shirts I need jewellery to dress me up "Strat Designs are all about colour, fun and style. I believe that women lead increasingly busy lives and that sometimes the simplest of outfits can be transformed with the right piece of jewellery, something eye-catching, colourful and quirky can literally brighten their day – especially if it gets them lots of comments!"

Cool stuff I found at the Supermarket

It's my parents 50th wedding anniversary next Friday and we are having a big family lunch this weekend. We are getting all of the kids and grandkids together for a family photograph but I wanted to give them something extra. 50 years is a long time, and it's their golden anniversary, so wanted to buy a big box and fill it with gold things - a gold medal, Old Gold chocolate, Golden Roughs, Gold Class tickets to the movies ... you get the picture.

While I was at Coles - I found the bar of chocolate above ... the 'Marital Bliss Bar' 50% his and 50% hers. Fabulous, love it, so funny.

And then I found this.

'Girth Control Chocolate' dressed up just like the pill (did you know it's the 50th anniversary of the pill this year also?) ... I laughed and laughed. I then had to explain the joke to the 15 year old checkout girl; as well as the meaning of the word 'girth'. Her girth was considerably less than mine so obviously wasn't an issue for her.

So I went home and checked out the website for Bloomsberry & Co chocolate ... have a look at the website, there are some seriously funny ideas there. Does the chocolate taste any good? I have no idea, haven't opened it yet but it's Swiss chocolate so should be good, but who really cares when the packaging is so funny and refreshing!

Here's another couple I just love - they have so many fabulous bars of choc, just have a look for yourself.

Such a busy day today getting a heap of orders ready and off to the post office. Thank you to everyone for being so patient, I've been slower than normal this week but am now fit and well! And if you are waiting on an order it is now in the mail!

Market fever ... not to be confused with Bieber Fever

billy mac clothing had a great day at Mathilda's Markets last Saturday, thanks to everyone who stopped by. A whole new customer base has been opened up to me that I didn't even know existed ..... wait for it .... Dad's who shop! I had no idea. I come from a family with lots of men and married a man with lots of brothers and no sisters; and this breed of 'men who shop' has completed escaped me until now. And thank god for them, so decisive, so committed in their decision - it was an eyes wide open day for me!

I also learnt that my boys shirts are much more popular than my girls shirts. As a mother of 2 girls I thought that my girls range was much stronger, but I think the lack of unique designs for boys has pushed customers in my direction.

Soooo in anticipation of the first ever Poppyseed Markets!!!!! I have printed lots of boys shirts, updated the range to include hoodies, some adults t-shirts featuring our most popular designs including the Kombi, Cooper and Louis. You can also expect to see short and long sleeve t-shirts for kids and the 100% organic cotton baby onesies.

I am completely obsessed with the front page of Etsy today.

Perhaps it's because it's dreary outside, perhaps because it's the afternoon and I still haven't cleared away the breakfast plates or perhaps it's because I have other work to do and I am using this as a distraction.

I would seriously love my l'enfant treasury to hit the front page ... it would be nice. It's filled with pretty things I would love for my girls.

And if l'enfant doesn't make it, I hope Ooh La La by Savage Kitten does ... we were both having a 'French' kind of day! They are both so pretty ... if you can, I would love it if you would click and leave a comment!

Lessons I learn from my daughters

When I picked up my daughter from daycare this afternoon (it's past midnight now?!) I was greeted with a Mothers' Day card and a tiny potted plant that the carers had made with the kids. My daughter was so proud when she gave it to me and I was so excited for her to be giving me a present ... it was almost like she was giving me diamonds. I have often said to my friends that I don't have the "gush" of other mothers, that somehow I'm missing that gene. I'm a soft and caring person but somehow with my girls my edges are a little harder, I'm quick to pull them back into line, frustrated when they don't listen and bothered by the mess and chaos that comes with two small children.

Today I gushed.

It was such a relief. I felt like a mum.

Today's lesson is to go a little slower, listen more, keep myself open and aware ... and then I might feel the gush again. Funny that the lessons I learn from them are the very things I am trying to teach them.

This morning's grumble is over and I've realised that like the Nike campaign, I need to 'Just Do It'. Phone calls out of the way, keys in hand ready to go to printer and post office, Excel files downloaded from bank (will do BAS statements tonight), car filled with petrol ... roll on Sunday and Mathilda's Market (I'm nervous about my 1st markets ... does it show?).

I won this cool print from the great people at Quirk Design Ltd, I'm having it made up in pale blue ... I like the idea of a beautiful, soft, calming colour and the quote about madness. Sums up my day perfectly. I've just realised that my BAS is due to the Tax Office today - and I haven't started. This happens to me every quarter. Three months worth of transactions for TWO businesses this time! Sitting in front of Excel and the accounting package is not my idea of a good time when the weather is so beautiful today.

I've also committed myself to a trip to the printer, the Post Office and am waiting for a courier (not to mention preparing for my 1st Mathilda's Markets this Sunday) .... let the madness begin

Looking forward to tomorrow

Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary. It's the first time I've really looked forward to celebrating the date as it's our first anniversary where I haven't been either pregnant or breastfeeding.

When I think back to that day which seemed such a long time ago (and it really wasn't long ago at all) I remember how fantastic we felt, the ease with which the day flowed and the confidence I felt in myself and the man I was marrying. I was excited to see friends and family, I loved my dress, I loved my flowers and I loved my husband and I was optimistic about the future.

So I look forward to tomorrow. And when I have a bad day and I'm tearing my hair out and the kids are screaming, I'll remember our wedding day, the way we felt and the plans we made and I'll dream of one day fitting back into that beautiful dress and remember the fantastic day preparing my bouquet with my gorgeous friends Penny from RedPoppies Wedding Flowers and the ever present, but oh so far away, Bianca.

But most of all I'll think about the quiet time Luke and I had together before we went to meet our guests and get married, when it was just the two of us in our best clothes in a gorgeous hotel room, looking forward to tomorrow.

Fast Cars

Anyone who knows me, is aware that my recent relationship with cars is not entirely healthy (as are the state of their engines). An extravagant but misguided purchase of a beautiful car several years ago; that I have been emotionally shackled to, has left me over the years trying to chase that same feeling in lesser cars and has over the last few months meant that I have been borrowing cars due to a blown engine in my day to day car.

While all this is going on, the "beautiful" car is sitting in the garage mocking me and bleeding me dry with monthly loan repayments. Beauty is one thing, but if I can't put the kids in the back, pick up the groceries or even DRIVE IT as the interior needs to be reinstalled ... well, beauty or a killer engine is not everything. Marrying a mechanic has only compounded, or created (sshh did I say that out loud?!?!) the problem.

So it's no surprise that there are a few old cars in my boys t-shirt collection. And today I found one of them in an Etsy treasury ... one day if the "beautiful" car gets finished and sold I might print it on a t-shirt .... in the meantime, please have a look at the treasury here!

How lovely ... this was such a nice surprise for me! I logged onto twitter and found a message from Kathryn of 'TikibooKids' pointing me in the direction of her gorgeous blog mamalovestoshop.

Mamalovestoshop is filled with fabulous finds for mums and bubs from a self confessed shopaholic. Today's feature is an Eiffel Tower inspired piece that includes the billy mac clothing Mon Cherie T-shirt. So beautiful! The 70s are back baby ...

Do you remember anodised aluminium cups from the 70s? I do. We used them at family picnics, holidays and my brother's football games. They came in fabulous colours and when you kept them in the esky they came out ice cold and your drinks stayed ice cold. I always fought to get the pink or the purple one ... I loved them so much, the colours were so bright, just thinking about them makes me happy.

Well they're back! You can buy them again online at www.collectionofcool.com.au along with a whole host of other cool stuff. The collection of cool cups are 100% recyclable and are manufactured in a carbon neutral environment (I'm sure my parents' cups were not so eco friendly) and they are all packaged up in a zippered neoprene case. The old one's came in a leather pouch and look like these one's I found on Ebay (although ours were much brighter).

My oldest babe slept from 9 weeks. 18months in and I'm still waiting for the youngest to catch on. Like most mums with a non-sleeper I'll try anything for a full uninterrupted 8 hours sleep so bought Sleepytime Bath from Ecostore NZ. I'm sure Sleepytime Bath was not the reason she slept through last night and it was all coincidence - but to me it is now a miracle in a bottle! Oh and it smells really nice ....

Oh Ikea, you've done it to me again! I was looking online for clothes racks for my first foray into selling at Mathilda's Markets in May; and somehow found the gorgeous SKRUVSTA Swivel armchair .... and at $199 it is within my reach. I LOVE the fabric. I'm not sure where it will go and I'm sure I don't need it but it is now on my wishlist. Will have to visit Ikea soon.

Today I bought these after a gentle point in the right direction from some 'twitter peeps'. Cool looking Babushka (is it Babushka or Matroyshka?) measuring cups. So perhaps now I can throw out the old orange ones that I think I may have swiped from my mum's kitchen and are perhaps older than me.

So until they arrive in the mail courtesy of ebay I will continue to sing Kate Bush tunes ...
